Functional Priorities

Data driven

Data, recognised as a highly valuable asset, will have fit for purpose governance, access arrangements, systems and technical skills. These building blocks underpin the progression of all the other functional priorities which each have their own specific data requirements and opportunities.

Overcoming the barriers to greater exploitation of the industry’s data assets will unlock a multitude of new opportunities to better serve customers, drive efficiency and target further technological progress.

"This priority is at the very core of the Rail Technical Strategy, underpinning all its elements and essential for the success and competitiveness of the future railway system and offerings." READ MORE

Who is doing what?

Many research and innovation activities support progress towards the goals set out for this priority. Visibility of these is essential to enable greater collaboration and increase the likelihood of success. This is why the RTS puts a spotlight on a selection of these activities, enables you to download the full list of activities of which we are aware, and invites you to add to this picture by sharing your own work.

Rail Data Marketplace

The central platform for finding and sharing rail data, RDM brings together data sources and services in one place, offering a simple and open way to share data.

Rail Signalling and Safety Simulator (RS2Sim)

A Rail Signalling and Safety Simulator used by new train drivers, RS2Sim is based on regulatory RSSB rulebooks and teaches users the principles of signalling and safety on the UK rail network.

Re4Rail

PhD studentship at the University of York is looking at digital twin-based automated technology to real-time repair, reuse, recycle and repurpose railway granular media.

Development of framework for assessing rail data value

RSSB research is developing and piloting a framework to estimate the value of GB rail data. This is intended to be used to prioritise and encourage access to industry data.

Enhanced Network Rail information and data interchange

Network Rail’s ENRICH Programme brings together projects facilitating the exchange and exploitation of NR rich datasets.

Inferring signal aspects from C-Class data

RSSB and University of Huddersfield collaboration aiming to infer signal aspects from widely available C-class signal data, which will extend RAATS coverage.

Red Aspect Approaches to Signals (RAATS)

RSSB and University of Huddersfield collaboration developed a set of algorithms to convert the Network Rail's open data feeds into useful information on the aspect displayed by signals when trains approach.

Data Sandbox Initiative

RSSB managed access to industry data samples for use in co-funded R&D at the feasibility / demonstrator level, with particular focus on improving network performance.
