CODA Cloud and the Future of Asset Management

Reliable and easy to maintain; Data driven

The maintenance of rail assets can represent a significant amount of the total operating costs for rail operators, with some experiencing an average of 10 maintenance-related site visits per month. With over 2,500 stations around the UK, these callouts carry have both a carbon cost and financial implication.

CODA, which was named winner of the Asset Management and Maintenance Excellence Award at the Rail Business Awards 2023 for its work in digitalising the railway sector and providing significant cost savings to hundreds of UK stations, has developed software that gathers, analyses and presents data about assets within a site, sharing it with users via a user-friendly interface. This gives engineers and maintenance teams enhanced visibility of systems and assets, allowing them to identify and diagnose the root cause of recurring issues remotely. It limits the need for multiple site visits and prevents asset failure, prolonging the overall lifespan of assets and avoiding the need for replacements. The platform can also help maintenance teams to predict future operational problems based on irregularities in an individual asset’s energy usage. Using a combination of submetering and advanced data analysis, CODA alerts managers to conduct proactive maintenance, resolving faults before they result in downtime and disruption for operators and passengers.

Rail property managers can also ensure that assets are operating efficiently and effectively, by monitoring equipment, building health and operational performance with devices programmed to set parameters. For example, strategically placed Internet of Things (IoT) sensors that continually monitor humidity, temperature and carbon dioxide levels. If these levels go above or below the optimum, the system automatically adjusts ventilation or heating to ensures the environment remains compliant with legislation and is safe and comfortable for travellers and employees.

CODA’s continuous monitoring provides a real-time view of energy usage across sites and stations, enabling property managers to identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency. Submetering individual assets and analysing their energy usage means CODA can ensure equipment is only used at appropriate times, thereby reducing energy wastage which has a significant impact on consumption and the financial and environmental costs associated with running sites.
