TESTING AND TRIALLING FACILITIES

University of Sheffield

Sheffield University Rolling Sliding contact testing facility

RTS PRIORITY AREAS1

Capability Statement

The SUROS machine allows rail-wheel interface testing at a small scale in the laboratory. Investigation of rail -wheel rolling contact fatigue (RCF), wear and adhesion, testing of lubricants, traction products, track circuits and sanding investigations are the main areas of testing for the machine. The machine is a closely controlled rolling-sliding twin disc contact configuration for rail-wheel contact simulation based in the laboratory. It enables a computer controlled variable slip (0 to 20%) and load (900-1800MPa contact pressure). Data can be logged for the load, traction and slip.

Capability – Systems

Closely controlled rolling-sliding twin disc contact for rail -wheel simulation; computer controlled variable slip (0-20%); load (900-1800MPa contact pressure; data logging of load, traction and slip; Eddy current RCF crack detection; permanent way.

Capability – Testing

Rail and wheel material testing; rail and wheel rolling contact fatigue testing; wear and adhesion testing; lubricants testing; traction testing; sanding investigations; track circuit Dynamic test; acoustic test; fatigue test
