TESTING AND TRIALLING FACILITIES

University of Sheffield

Sheffield University Full scale rail-wheel contact testing facility

RTS PRIORITY AREAS

Capability Statement

The facility allows for full scale rail-wheel interface testing within a laboratory environment. It has the ability to test for applications such as rolling contact fatigue (RCF), wear and adhesion, lubricants testing traction products, track circuits and sanding investigations. The equipment allows full scale closely controlled rail-wheel contact testing using full size rail and wheel in the laboratory.

Capability – Systems

Closely controlled rail-wheel contact testing full size rail and wheel; computer controlled slip and load; data logging of load, traction and slip; permanent way.

Capability – Testing

Aerodynamic slipstream measurements of static pressure and air velocity. Associated measurements of pressure and force on vehicles and/or trackside structures. The measurements can be undertaken as part of risk assessments of high-wind conditions where natural wind conditions are the driving force, vehicle-induced impact studies where the vehicle generates the wind/pressure of concern or cross-wind studies where both natural and vehicle-induced components exist.
