The Helrom Trailer Wagon overcomes barriers to intermodal freight

Freight Friendly
Relevant RTS critical priority(ies): Freight Friendly

Quick and easy transfer of freight between road and rail is important to offer flexible, cost-effective services to customers. But loading road truck trailers onto rail wagons requires expensive facilities that take years to build. Routes are inflexible, because a specialised terminal costing millions cannot be relocated if supply chains shift. Due to these barriers, only a very small proportion of truck trailers are currently transported by rail.

The new Helrom Trailer Wagon overcomes this problem, requiring just level ground next to the track. The trailer is unloaded from the truck and the wagon swings open to the side to allow the trailer to load. The wagon closes again to allow transportation. The process works in reverse as the trailer is unloaded and taken the last mile to its destination by road. It works for both crane and non-crane trailers.
