The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE) at the University of Surrey, through its Computer Science department and the Institute for Communication Systems (ICS), has a strong track record of impactful research in the rail industry. This includes projects such as:

AGELink: Reducing knock-on rail delays with Network Rail and GWR.

Accessible Travel: Integrating data to enhance journeys for passengers with disabilities.

Real Time Flow (RTF): Predicting movement of trains, people, and goods using AI/ML, leading to a patent on efficient AI in constrained environments.

OJPA: Alternative travel planning using reinforcement learning, which led to the Moses Mobility spin-out for shared taxi rides for delayed passengers.

SAFRON: A secure shared communication network for trains, with partners like Network Rail and TRL.

APTd5G: Using ML to detect threats in 5G core networks, in collaboration with Amity University India.

TUDOR: Developing resilient and interoperable open networks for 5G and beyond, with applications in rail.

OneWeb: Extending 5G coverage via satellite to support reliable, high-coverage connectivity, particularly for rail.
