Innovative iWagon solution being piloted on the GB network
iWagon aims to revolutionise freight performance by significantly improving safety capabilities, creating operational efficiencies and increasing asset availability. It is the result of a collaboration between VTG Rail UK, and Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems (UK).
Lack of power has traditionally restricted the use of on-wagon remote condition monitoring solutions. iWagon overcomes this barrier through generators fitted on axles. These can provide enough power for a vast range of remote condition monitoring solutions and systems.
Remote condition monitoring solutions include ‘Wheel Flat Prevention’ (WFP), a patented system which monitors wheelset slides and brake conditions. It allows for better maintenance of wheelset conditions, preventing track damage, and increasing the longevity and availability of wagons. This solution also mitigates derailment risk by detecting locked axles and communicating this condition to the driver.
A Brake Condition Monitoring (BCM) system has also been deployed. This removes the need for annual brake tests, and promotes maintenance flexibility and enhanced customer service.
As of 2024, a nine-wagon trial is underway. Three JPA tank wagons owned by VTG have incorporated iWagon solutions, including the fitment of new wheelsets containing the four axle-end generators to provide power. These will service Tarmac bulk aggregate flow. The additional wagons in this trial are being deployed on the Hanson and Mendip Rail fleets.
