TESTING AND TRIALLING FACILITIES

Heriot Watt University

Geotechnical true triaxial facility (GeoTT)

RTS PRIORITY AREAS

Capability Statement

GeoTT is a true triaxial testing rig used to test the performance of railway subgrade/ballast materials when exposed to railway traffic. It can apply unique loading conditions (rotation of principal stresses) to cubic material samples up to 400m3 in size. This simulates highly realistic moving train loads thus allowing for testing/validation of new subgrade materials. GeoTT is one of the largest true triaxial rigs in Europe.

Capability – Systems

Ground remediation; rack foundation performance; Ballast track; slab track; ballast particles

Capability – Testing

Rotation of principal stresses; soil loading; ballast behaviour; long-term behaviour; 400mm3 cubic samples
